Maze featuring Frankie Beverly headlines the annual soul and R&B celebration
Back for its hotly anticipated fifth year, the San Diego Soul festival is poised to set the Pechanga Arena alight with a bill of bonafide star-status acts including soul and funk pioneer Frankie Beverly with his band Maze, urban contemporary crooner Kieth Sweat, Broadway-performer-turned-R&B-icon Stephanie Mills and gospel-tinged, romantic balladeers Next.
Originally beginning life as Raw Soul, Frankie Beverly and his groove-steady backing band Maze formed in Philadelphia in 1970. Taken under the wing of the legendary Marvin Gaye, they changed their name to Maze after hitting the road with the Heard It Through The Grapevine hitmaker and started making gold records in 1977, a time when Disco ruled the dance floor. Sticking to their soul/funk roots, they blazed a trail with classics like Golden Time Of Day, Joy and Pain, The Look In Your Eyes and While I'm Alone.
