South Pacific

A show of rare enchantment. It is novel in texture and treatment, rich in dramatic substance, and eloquent in song, a musical play to be cherished.

Why see South Pacific?
Some enchanted evening
Take a dip with San Diego Musical Theatre when they mount this brand new production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic. Debuting in 1949, this progressive musical touches on themes of racial prejudice as detailed in the Pulitzer Prize-winning account of the Pacific campaign by James A. Michener. Featuring a raft of R & O's most winning hits, it's a walk down memory lane that still carries resonance today.
Two love stories intertwine as the threat of World War II looms over the idyllic Polynesian landscape. The first between Nellie and Emile, as she struggles to overcome her prejudice towards his mixed-race children, and the second between an American navy lieutenant and a Tonkinese woman, where he fears becoming a social outcast should he marry her. As both couples navigate their own shortcomings, this wonderful musical rolls out a tale that'll stick with you long after you leave the theater.
